The City Council of Arona has collected in a publication the four short stories awarded in the literary contest of the first edition of Arona of Arts and Letters, a compilation that will become part of the catalog of the municipal library network. The mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena, and the Councilor for Culture and Education, Leopoldo Díaz Oda, delivered today (December 28) 25 copies to the winners, in the youth and adult categories, four promises of Canarian literature that they wanted send copies dedicated to the sponsors of this first edition of Arona de las Artes y las Letras, Almudena Grandes and Martín Chirino.
The first short story awards, in the youth and adult categories, fell, respectively, on Leandro José Suárez Morales, with El director de tu vida, and José María Ramos Fernández, with El don, as well as two second prizes for Mónica Ravelo García and her A cloudy dawn, and Roberto Celso Cossio Graffiña, with A virtuous order of estrangement. In addition to the winners, this publication includes, at the proposal of the jury, the story Mathilde, by Efraín García López.
The winners participated with their families in a simple act, which also served to announce that they are already working on the second edition of Arona de las Artes y las Letras 2018. The mayor recalled that this cultural meeting "has a clear vocation for continuity, because culture is always the best investment "and thanked the municipality for the gift of" some stories that become part of the literary heritage of our city. "
The Councilor for Culture stressed that "this work collects a multitude of visions that come together in a choral work and with a common element: devotion to literature." We are very grateful to all the participating authors for allowing us to be a speaker of their creativity and we hope may this humble publication be the first of many in their careers. "
The Board of Culture of the City of Arona launched, in this first edition of Arona de las Artes y las Letras, open competitions to all residents in the Canary Islands in the disciplines of short story, painting and sculpture. The initiative was born with the purpose of serving as support and platform for the new artistic and literary promises of the Canary Islands, taking advantage of the international diffusion that grants it to be one of the main tourist destinations of the country. With 9,000 euros in prizes, only three prizes of a total of 12 were deserted.
In addition to the short story awards, Juan Carlos Sánchez Lezcano and Juan Antonio Hernández González won the first prizes of the adult category in painting and sculpture, respectively, with second prize for Gonzalo Sabina Martín and María Dácil Martín Trujillo; in juvenile, they were deserted, except for the second prize of painting, for Ainhoa Bhatia Armas.
Arona de las Artes y las Letras 2017 was held in Los Cristianos from October 4 to 6 and featured an extensive program of activities that, in addition to the award ceremony of this first edition, included meetings with the public and debates , moderated by the journalist and writer from Tenerife Juan Cruz and with the participation of the writer Almudena Grandes and the vice president of the Martín Chirino Foundation, Marta Chirino; besides signatures of books and a retrospective of the work of Chirino for the first time in Arona, in an exhibition curated by the director of MACEW, Celestino Celso Hernández, and that included the presentation of the last work of the artist, Otro infinito sobre Canarias, an aquatint that the author created expressly for the first edition of the Arona cultural contest of Arts and Letters and that has become part of the artistic fund of this Canarian tourist city.
